In the 1980s & early 90s she acted in offbeat art films like Rukmavati ki Haveli, Suraj ka Satvan Ghoda ,Trishagni, Vanchit, Rihaee etc. She also played supporting character artiste roles as a sister or the heroine's friend in commercial big budget films like Saudagar, Panaah, Tehelka, Mujrim etc. She was nominated for 'Best Supporting Actress' at the Filmfare Awards for her role as a handicapped girl in Andha Yudh (1988). She is married to Bollywood film maker Vivek Agnihotri and currently hosts a singing competition Saregamapa on Zee Marathi. She is one of the few female Indian actors to have balanced her work on television as well as on the big screen. Since her role as Kasturba Gandhi in Shyam Benegal's Making of Mahatma (1995) she hasn't appeared in any film to date. Her better known TV appearances were in Mr Yogi, Justujoo, Alpviram, Mriganayani and Imtihaan and her most famous doordarshan serial has been aarohan,a youth serial based on navy.
The work performed by her as Anchor for Marathi Saragamapa is highly appreciated by Marathi audience. She is the anchor of this program since first episode. Though the judges for this program have been changed but the anchor is not. The only thing that some people did not like about her in this program is that she asks the audience to clap for any irrelevant incidences during the show. In one of the episodes the irrelevant clapping happened 10 times. She has also played a lead role in "Rita", a Marathi film directed by Renuka Shahane, opposite to Jackie Shroff.
