Vahinichi Maya (1985)

Rajesh studies in a medical college and lives a middle-class life with his elder, crippled brother, Yogesh, his Bhabhi, Madhavi, who is a devotee of Bhagwan Shri Sai Baba, and a trusted servant, Ramu. Yogesh is employed as an Accountant and continues to work despite of his disability so that Rajesh could become a doctor and fulfill his dreams. Madhavi gets pregnant but due to an internal womb injury is unable and will never conceive. Then after passing his exams, Rajesh gets married to his wealthy sweetheart, Priya Deshmukh, much to the displeasure of her mom, as she would have liked her to get married to someone really wealthy. Her efforts to get Rajesh to come and live in their spacious bungalow, and open his own dispensary are all in vain. But she does get some new furniture for Priya, which does not auger well with Madhavi and Yogesh. Yogesh quits his job on Rajesh' and Priya's insistence. When Priya gets pregnant, Ramu informs Rajesh that Madhavi has stolen Priya's gold ear-rings. Rajesh does not believe this, but when Madhavi poisons a glass of milk meant for Priya, he confronts her, gets her to admit that it was indeed she who had stolen the ear-rings as well as poisoned the milk, then he and Priya move out and go to live with the Deshmukhs. With no income coming in, Yogesh starts working as a peon with Sainath Constructions. After Priya gives birth to a baby boy, Rajesh decides to forgive Madhavi and decides to let him see his son - not knowing that he is opening up a Pandora's box that will only result in more bitterness, acrimony, and create even more misunderstandings as well as a death in the family.

Synopsis:

The newly appointed village schoolteacher arrives in the hamlet. Faced with hostility, he decides to win over the hearts of the people so that they would entrust him with their children. He starts to address their small concerns of daily life, help them with running errands in the small town, and mediates in their disputes. Soon his school starts flourishing with enthusiastic students and parents. The high point is the building of the community gymnasium with the participation of all the villagers and the inauguration by the prince of the state.
The usual joys and sorrows of daily life continue amidst the growth of the school. It is as if the young teacher lived through a couple of thrilling dramas, a few interesting short stories and a long epic novel about the life of simple common folk. But with time, drought forces the shepherds to migrate in search of pasture. The teacher is transferred and as he leaves by the same path as he had arrived, he now has a profound insight into the ways of nature and the lives of these simple people with their maturity, simplicity, even nobility in their self-dependence and approach to problems with conscience and a sense of justice and fair play.

Mukta (1994)

Mukta (1994)

Mukta is the grand-daughter of Abasaheb Kanase-Patil, a veteran of Maharashtra 's co-operative movement. She returns to her ancestral home in a district town of Maharashtra after spending her entire life in the United States where her parents, Eknath and Yashoda, are settled. But Mukta has always felt alienated in the US and has longed to return to India . A post-graduate scholarship to study sociology makes this possible. At the university she meets Milind Wagh, a fearless student leader and poet, to whom she is drawn, much to the chagrin of her Indian family. When things seem to be on the brink, news arrives that her American friend Julian is expected. Her family is happy, hoping that he will be able to ease the situation. But Julian turns out to be a black American. The triangular relationship of Mukta-Milind-Julian develops towards an unusual conclusion as issues of casteism, classism and Indianness are exposed and explored.

“Tya Ratri Paus Hota” is a Marathi film released very recently in 2009. The title translated literally would mean ‘it rained that night’. It is not, however, the story of just one long rainy night. In fact, nothing much happens during the night except towards the climax.

The rainy night brings together by chance Avinash (Subodh Bhave) and Raavi (Amruta Subhash), brother and sister, after many long years of separation. Earlier in their childhood, the two children and their father Vishwas (Sandeep Mehta) and mother Gayatri (Sonali Kulkarni) have been a happy family. But there is a villain in the story, politician Shripatrao (Sayaji Shinde), a man of evil designs. He falsely implicates Vishwas and gets him sent him to jail. When Gayatri seeks his help to get her husband released, he agrees but makes her pay a heavy price for this favour. Vishwas is furious when he comes to know of it, and unaware of the fact that what Gayatri did was only for his sake, he leaves home with Avi, and Raavi is left with Gayatri.

When Avi and Ravee meet on that rainy night, they exchange the half-truths that they had known and lived with, and the real and complete truth emerges. By that time it is morning and the movie ends on a ray of hope.

Unlike most other rain-soaked movies, thunder and lightning are conspicuous by their absence in “Tya Ratri Paus Hota”. The film does begin with a scene shot in a heavy downpour, but the rain continues in the form of intermittent showers, some of them heavy, to use the meteorologist’s language. Rains are also a part of some of the flashback scenes, and the songs speak of overcast skies and cloudbursts. However, there are no particularly good natural shots of rain that would justify the title of the film. What we see is mostly water trickling down the roofs, or rainwater drenched in blue light, or car headlights beaming through the rain.

The story attempts to revive memories washed away in floods and long forgotten. It has flashbacks of happiness drowned in cloudbursts of lust, greed and exploitation. “Tya Ratri Paus Hota” is more like a night of artificial rain that the story could even have done without!
