Anaahat 2003

Anahat (Eternity) is a 2003 Marathi film directed by Amol Palekar and starring Sonali Bendre, Anant Nag and Deepti Naval. Anahat focuses on a woman (Bendre) asserting her right to sexual fulfillment. Anahat, (the eighth feature film of the actor-turned-director), is the second offering by Palekar which examines gender-related issues, the first being Daayra. The film was inspired by Surendra Verma’s Hindi play Surya ki Antim Kiran Se Surya Ki Pehli Kiran Tak. Anahat was screened as the opening film of the 2003 Indian Panorama, an International film festival.
Plot
Anahat is set in the 10th century, in Shravasti, the capital of the Kingdom of Malla. Anahat revolves around two individuals — the king of Malla (Nag) who is unable to provide an heir and the Queen, Sheelavati (Bendre), who forced to choose a potent mate for one night. But while the queen is ordered to merely produce an inheritor through the prevalent custom of Niyoga, she ends up enjoying the sexual act. Her overt demand for a repeat act thickens the plot.

Sanjay Surkar
Music:Ashok Patki
Story: Gautam Rajadhyaksha, Yogesh Khadikar
Far of from the usual storylines of commercial movies where two people meet, develop romantic love for each other and then live a happy life every after, Sanjay Surkar’s Sakhi is a movie which is unusual in all respects and aspects. It moves away from typical comedy forcibly included in movies to deviate the audience’s attention from a weak script and keep the movie going. Sakhi is a story of a relationship that develops between two strangers brought together by fate.
The two strangers, Suryakant Jagdale(Ashok Saraf) and Nishi ( Sonali Kulkarni ) find each other at a such a time in their life when both need support and a mentor to guide them. Suryakant, an accountant returns to his village Jatgaon, where he is born and brought up by his godmother Kunda Tai (Usha Nadkarni). He hides the fact from her and his friends that he is actually been fired from his job. He decides to spend his time by doing something for the villagers. But his all efforts end in vain. Restless, frustrated and tired, Suryakant contemplates on what is to be done next when he hears a woman’s cry for help.
Soaked in blood and badly bruised, he sees Nishi (Sonali Kulkarni) being chased by two men. He saves her and takes her to his house. Nishi narrates the tale of how she was married of by her brothers into a rich Inamdar family. She comes to know on her wedding night itself that her husband is not loyal to her. Her brother-in-law eyes her every time with bad intension and her mother -in-law turns a blind eye to all this and reminds her that she should actually be obliged to them for taking her into their family and not complain. Sonali Kulkarni in Sakhi
Sonali Kulkarni gives her best performance ever as a woman suppressed by the conditions, trying her best to adjust to her cursed fate. Unable to bear the brunt any longer, she runs away from the house. When is refused an entry into her brother’s house, she admits herself into a women’s ashram but there too she does not find solace. She escapes from the ashram only to be chased by two men and finally being saved by Suryakant.
Ashok Saraf gives a strong performance after a long time by playing a role of a mere understanding friend who strives to give a new meaning to his Sakhi’s life, a woman who needs support, care and security. A relationship which is beyond friendship develops between the two. Sonali’s voice gives her an advantage in playing out well her role of a tortured wife and of innocent village lass.
The movie drags too much with in the second half. The ego clashes shown between Subodh Bhave and Saraf are unnecessary. Some scenes are too obvious in the movie. The end of the movie is seems to have well thought about but was also dragged a lot. Though the movie loses its touch in the here and there, it is brought back by effective dialogues and strong performances by Saraf and Usha Nadkarni, who plays an understanding and supportive character. Certainly a bold subject to make a movie on but would have been effective if the script was more intense.

मन पाखरु पाखरु Man Pakharu Pakharu (२००८)
The story starts at hospital, where Dr. Neelay Raje (Subodh Bhave) joins as new doctor. He is a sensitive guy, unlike other doctors his emotions are not died yet. He wants to discover his own path and wants to treat patients from his heart instead of brain. He finds his inspiration from Dr. Pandit (Prashant Damle) in same hospital. While treating the patients facing neurological disorder, he interacted with a young patient- Sarang (Sachin Pilagavkar). Sarang is like an alive dead body. He has lost all his senses. Neelay finds out extraordinary willpower of Sarang and gives all the efforts to bring him back in this world. Further story develops through amazing relations, emotions and dialogs between Sarang and Neelay. Different aspects of relations of a doctor and a patient, a mother and a son, doctor and hospital owner or even between two patients have been covered brilliantly in the movie. The story provides quiet lot information about neurological disorder without breaking flow of story. Though it is a very static subject, Iravati Karnik- story and screen play writer has taken enough care to make it interesting. It is extremely good and successful attempt of Iravati- a new generation author to write such an informative but still entertaining story. All the time she had kept in mind that it's a commercial movie, not a documentary and audiences admire her efforts a lot.
Movie has got really good star cast. 'Subodh Bhave', 'Sachin Pilgavkar', 'Mohan Joshi', 'Prashant Damle', 'Ila Bhate' and 'Girija'. Names are enough to state the high class acting and it would be better experience to watch them on screen, instead of reading about their high-quality acting over here. Sachin has spent more than 4 decades in the industry but day by day his acting is getting more and more younger. He himself is a school of acting and we have seen many great renowned actors inspired by him. All the feature of his role has been presented incredibly by Sachin. It is a challenge for any actor to perform a mentally handicapped patient, yet Sachin has presented it magnificently. He hardly cries in the movie, but his facial expressions, body language and dialog delivery literally make the audiences cry. A patient of neurological disorder, a young man, a good son and beyond all, an enthusiastic and kind hearted human being, all these aspect of Sarang's character has charmingly shown by Sachin. He had actually got into the skins of Neelay. He had lived the character and I have no doubt in my mind that it is going to be milestone character in Marathi Film Industry. Subodh Bhave sounds good in role of Neelay. All the characteristics of Neelay like a shy doctor, emotional human being and helpless friend in the case of Sarang has played nicely by him. Prashant Damle, Ila Bhate and Mohan Joshi are as usual acted well. Girija hasn't got much scope to show her skills.
Director Ankush Bhat had taken fine efforts to present such a beautiful story without losing depth of it. Thanks to Ankush, for not converting such a sensitive story into a mockery or 'filmy.' Music of Jitendra Kulkarni adds nice essence to the story. Especially, the symphony that he has used as theme music is really heart-touching.

Pratisaad-the Response (2010)

Producers: Dr. Vijaysinha Amarsinha Nikam
Co-Producers: Dr. Suchitra Nikam, Dr. Manish Nikam
Ex-Producers: Y. D. G. Films ( Amey Lagwankar )
Director: Yogesh Dattataraya Gosavi
Concept: Dr. Amarsinha Nikam
Screenplay: Gautam - Tejas
Music: Rohit Nagbhide
Cast: Sandeep Kulkarni, Kishore Kadam, Neelam Shirke, Anand Alkunte, Siddheshwar Zadbuke, Jayant Savarkar, Suneel Tawade, Pragati Joshi, Nlilambari, Pratibha Date.
‘Pratisaad- The Response’ holds on to the truth
'The tongue has no bone and it wiggles more against the celebrities than the common man.' The more you are popular and a celebrity, you are bound to be targeted by your opponents by way of criticism. This is a common observation and the success of homeopathy treatment and their practicing doctors are no exception to such controversies.
Today, Marathi films are coming up with new ideas based on realities in life and the audience is ready for it. ‘Pratisaad-The Response’ the latest released film has come out with a revolutionary theme, which has been converted into a full length feature film by director Yogesh Dattatray Gosavi. In fact, it is the first film in the world on the backdrop of Homeopathy treatment and its success. Moreover, the film is based on a real life story of practicing Homeopath - Dr. Vijaysinha Amarsinha Nikam, who is also the producer of this film.
| In the film, Dr. Aditya ( Sandeep Kulkarni) , a leading Homeopathy practitioner with his full fledged hospital, is challenged by a phone call in the midst of a live TV interview series. The caller – Sarjerao (Kishore Kadam) accuses him of using fraudulent means of treatment and the TV host on the suggestion of his Programme producer, flares up the issue by asking Dr. Aditya to react on the media reports quoting Homeopathy as ‘fake science’. Needless to say that the media furore follows, giving a new twist to this debate for higher TRP’s.. |
The overall effort of the director to present this theme has been good. Very cleverly, he has tried to focus on the Doctor-Patient relationship i.e. more than treating the disease, the medicine treats the patient. The screenplay also highlights the role played by a committed doctor to convince effectively the close relative of the patient and that is the real strength of the film. After all, it is the attitude of the patient’s relatives that is to be handled well. However, in this film, in spite of his best efforts, the doctor fails to convince an adamant Sarjerao, for obvious reasons, which are disclosed at the end of the film.
‘Pratisaad-the Response’ is a path breaking film, which not only creates awareness about the treatment of Homeopathy but also goes beyond the traditional therapy, revealing certain facts. Sandeep Kulkarni as Dr. Aditya is very impressive. Watching his emotions in that climax scene at the TV studio, while admitting how much of faith his wife had in him, clearly proves his class. Kishore kadam, another talented actor has supported him well in the role of Sarjero. Neelam Shirke as Ms. Renu, does an excellent job, with a good support coming from other artistes. All the hospital scenes have been captured well. One background song has been used at the appropriate place. Editing work is satisfactory. Photography is good, but there are too many close ups in the film and those repeatedly used are of the male TV host for no particular reason. Barring that lapse, the film is well presented with the hope of getting international recognition for dealing effectively with an universal theme.
Dhudgus 2008

Dhudgus
- Cast & Crew :Bharat Jadhav, Nirmiti Sawant, Makrand Anaspure, Sanjay Narvekar, Suhas Palshikar, Hemangi Kavi, Ravindra Berde, Uday Sabnis, Sharad Pongashe, Leena Bhagwat
- Director :Rajesh Deshpande
- Writer :Rajesh Deshpande, Girish Salvi
The Marathi movie, which means chaos, speaks of human greed and how people try to exploit and take advantage of situations. A young bride loses her soldier husband, and thereby believed to have brought misfortune to the family. The in-laws and parents disown her, leaving her with nowhere to go. But when the government decides to award her compensation for the death of her husband, things suddenly change.
Dhudgus” which literally means chaos is a Marathi movie about a small unnamed village in Maharahstra. An army officer from the village marries a girl of another village. As it is a typical arrange marriage, the couple meet for the first time at their marriage. Even before they could start knowing each other, he is called back to the border.
Unfortunately he is killed in the war. Barely married a few days, she is called ill-luck by her husband’s family, her parents too don’t want to take responsibility of their daughter. The boy’s family doesn’t want her neither does her own family. She is shocked beyond measures to do anything. She had lost a husband she barely knew.
The Village head man and former head man wants to cash on the death of the soldier and try to get political mileage out of the situation. The widow of the soldier is not wanted by anybody when the state political leader announces a compensation of 25 Lac rupees along with a few acre of land for the widow of the solider.
What follows is chaos as people try to lay their hands on the money with each character trying to take advantage of the situation. Both family along with the village politicians try to lay claim on the compensation money. The village politicians try to outdo each other in building a statue and a school in the name of the soldier.
Suddenly the people lay bare their inner weaknesses as they try to outdo each other using whatever means possible. What exposes is the ugly side of human behavior.
As I sat there watching Dhudgus, I couldn’t help but compare it with the current situation in India. Politicians are trying to get mileage of the situation as the dead soldiers and policemen are used to promote their own interest. It seems Dhudgus was written for the situation after the attack on Mumbai.
Although the movie is about a death of a solider, it does not fall into the familiar trap of invoking love for the country nor does it tries to glamorize the death of the soldier. Infact the death is just the start of the whole drama.
Instead it concentrates on people and their mentality spicing the movie with dark humor. The movie does not have a hero or heroine, neither does it tries to make anyone a hero. Even the climax is subdued without being over melodramatic but highly effective. The director and story have managed to control the drama and tell a simple story. It does not make any comments neither passes any judgement but makes us think of what we have become.
Dhudgus set up in rural Maharahstra captures the essence of a typical Marahstrian village. After Valu, this was another songless movie which made quite an impact with its characters and observation of village life.
Dhudgus has many characters played by many veterans of Marathi Cinema and theatre. Standing among them notably are Sanjay Narvekar as the young headman of the village, Nirmiti Sawant as the only person who helps the young widow and Suhas Palshikar as the former headman of the village. Hemangi Kavi plays the young widow and plays it quite effectively. Other notable actors include Ravindra Berde, Avinash Narkar and Uday Sabnis.
The screen play is Girish Salvi and Ganesh Deshpande and they have kept it short. The director Rajesh Deshpande succeeds in making a great movie and hopefully commercially viable. Although it does succeed in attacking the fall of morality of the society.
